Sherrone Moore stepped to the podium on Monday, as Michigan emerged from its bye week, and addressed the Wolverines’ quarterback situation that hasn’t been a smooth one in 2024.

Moore’s 24th-ranked team is treading water coming off its national championship season, and this Saturday brings another tough game as Michigan visits No. 22 Illinois, one of college football’s darlings in the 1st half of this season.

The consistency that Michigan enjoyed with JJ McCarthy at the helm is long gone because McCarthy is long gone to the NFL. So now what? Well, it sounds like Moore might be making yet another change at quarterback for Saturday’s showdown in Champaign, after the Wolverines started the 2024 season with senior Davis Warren at QB before switching to junior Alex Orji in Week 4 against USC.

Senior Jack Tuttle replaced an ineffective Orji in a Week 6 loss at Washington that preceded the bye week. Now, Tuttle, despite committing 2 turnovers in the final 10 minutes of the loss in Seattle, might be getting his 1st start on Saturday.

“He’s been who he’s been,” said Moore of Tuttle. “He’s done a really good job and continued to progress.”

Moore has been impressed about Tuttle’s leadership since the Washington game during the bye week, and though he wouldn’t commit to starting Tuttle in Week 8, it sounds like Michigan might be starting its 3rd quarterback of a still young season. Moore even mentioned Monday that the players call Tuttle “Uncle Jack,” a reference to him possibly settling into a starting role going forward.

When asked who would be the backup QB, Moore simply said “we’ll see” but also said Orji will “have a role” in the offense. Though Orji’s work has a er has not been serviceable, he remains a threat in the run game.
