Nebraska’s top prospect in the Class of 2023, Malachi Coleman, may be earning a redshirt this season. Coleman did not play on Saturday during the Cornhuskers’ 40-7 win over UTEP.
At first, that raised a bit of a red flag among the Nebraska faithful. Some wondered if an injury was to blame, considering 107 players saw action against the Miners.
According to several reports out of Nebraska’s media availability Monday, it seems the plan may very well be to redshirt the talented receiver.
Don’t think of that as a negative towards Coleman though – instead, it may be a testament to Nebraska’s depth at receiver.
Nebraska WR Malachi Coleman is healthy, coach Matt Rhule says. #Huskers could redshirt him this year, which is a testament to the receiver depth and Coleman’s future potential.

Indeed, dynamic Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola has plenty of weapons at wideout this year. Isaiah Neyor, a transfer from Texas/Wyoming, hauled in 6 receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown against UTEP. Jahmal Banks played well too, adding 4 receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown of his own. In total, 11 different Cornhuskers caught a on Saturday.
Coleman played sparingly last season, totaling 8 receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown.
The Cornhuskers will be back in action this Saturday against Colorado, which needed all 60 minutes to beat FCS powerhouse North Dakota State last week. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Lincoln with the game set to be aired on ABC.
